OK, I've searched Google Groups for over an hour now and can't find a good solution to this, so I'll bring it here and see what I get.

My brother has a Dell laptop with Windows XP Home that won't log on. He clicks his logon and enters his password and it goes to "Loading Personal Settings" then instantly goes right back to logging off.

I tried starting in Safe Mode and logging on as the Administrator and got the same results.

Anyone know of a fix for this??? My brother called Dell and they told him that they couldn't support that problem?? [img]confused.gif[/img]

Thanks for the link 316, and no worries, although this seems like a common problem there doesn't seem to be a common solution anywhere!

Try hitting F8 during boot up for a step-by-step confirmation of every driver and whatnot windows is loading. You can disable some that might be causing problems while loading.

Then after entering the username and password, hold the left shift key down and it will prevent anything in the startup folder from launching.

If that doesn't work, it'd probably be easiest to reformat the laptop and reinstall the OS.

Thanks Baimun, that didn't work so it looks like a new install, or at least a repair install is what's going to have to be done.

Now my problem is finding my brother's XP disc in the heaps of crap that he lives amongst!
